About Ashikaga Institute of Technology

Message from the President

@Our Institute has been committed to offering its students a firm foundation in engineering and to assisting their preparation for lives of learning and for the challenges they encounter in the diverse environments of the global society.

The spirit of gWah or harmony, advocated by Prince Shotoku (574-622), is the school motto of Ashikaga Institute of Technology (AIT). We believe this spirit, which signifies harmony between people and people, man and society, and human and environment, will become increasingly important particularly in the fields of industry and technology. When focusing on the development of technology, it seems our efforts have not always been successful in creating harmony between the individual and society, or between man and nature, and have sometimes resulted in various problems including the destruction of the environment. We feel, in part, this is due to the lack of a global perspective and an overemphasis on economic efficiency. In the 21st century, however, it is imperative for us to develop industry and technology with a consideration for the harmony between mankind and nature. In other words, gwarm-heartednessh must form a principal part of technology.

AITfs curriculum of general education includes gMan and Natureh as a compulsory subject. We believe it is our duty to provide opportunities for a broad education as well as for specialized knowledge and foster engineers and researchers who can contribute to the harmonious development of the global community. AIT also provides the local residents of Ashikaga with its facilities and technical know-how to contribute to the development of the community. Based on its philosophy of gcooperation,h AIT organizes several seminars annually for the general public making full use of its network and facilities. We are also ready to responds quickly to proposals for joint research and development projects from local enterprises.

We are looking forward to seeing many highly motivated young people in our campus and sharing in the joy of learning engineering.

Dr. Izumi Ushiyama
President
